Be not confused with Calgon Carbon .

Calgon is a registered trademark of water softener, and bath and beauty products. The original product consists of sodium hexametaphosphate powder (amorphous sodium polyphosphate), which in water will be complex with ambient calcium ions and certain other cations, preventing unwanted salt formation and interference by the cation with the action of soap or other detergents. The name is portmanteau derived from the phrase " cal kiss gon e". Initially promoted for general use in bathing and cleaning, it gives rise to a derivative product that has deviated from its original composition. Today, Calgon water softener contains an active substance zeolite and polycarboxylic, which is less problematic in wastewater treatment than phosphate.

Calgon water softener was first introduced to the market in 1933 by Calgon, Inc. from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Calgon, Inc. acquired by Merck in 1968 and subsequently broken up and sold. Currently, the brand is owned by Reckitt Benckiser for use in Europe as a water softener, and in the United States by the Ilex Consumer Products Group as a bath and beauty product.

Ads

In the popular culture of North America, Calgon ads have produced some popular slogans and/or definitions, which have been referenced in many songs, television shows, and subsequent films.

Calon, take me away!

This ad is for Calgon bath and beauty products.

In this ad, a woman wearing a hairy pink robe is seen in a chaotic house scenario. As the tension escalated, he uttered the slogan "Calgon, take me away!" The next scene shows him relaxing in a quiet bathroom.

"Ancient Chinese Secrets, huh?"

A set of ads from the early 70s that lasted for years was for Calgon powders softener for the laundry. They were placed in a Chinese laundry somewhere in Anytown, USA.

A Caucasian female customer at the counter (American actress Pamela Wiley) asked "Mr. Lee" (played by Chinese-American actor Calvin Jung), "How did you get your t-shirt so white ?" He put a finger to his lips and said, in a light Chinese accent, "Ancient Chinese Secrets."

The scene shifts to Mrs. Lee (Japanese-American actress Anne Miyamoto) in the back room, who overhears her husband and says - in a flat Midwestern accent - "My husband! Some heroes! This is " Ancient Chinese Secrets "- Calgon!" Madame Lee later praised Calgon's new formula, stating that when added to rinse water, it helps make the clothing 30 percent cleaner.

The new customer will come out of the laundry when Mrs. Lee appears around the door frame and calls her husband, "We need more Calgon!" Customers turned and challenged Mr. Lee: "'The Secret of Ancient China,' yes?" Mr. Lee smiled shyly and shrugged.

In other countries

Calgon water softener advertisements in the UK, Ireland and throughout Europe (including Italy) promote products solely on the basis of a washing machine savings from damage rather than any benefit to underwear in washing, even though the products sold are identical to those in the United States. This difference is taken into account by the prevalence in European household washers with intrinsic heating, which elements benefit from the prevention of boiler scales.

In Portugal, Calgon's ad jingle is the most popular, for nearly 30 years.

In Italy, from 1965 to Spring 2008, Calgon was called Calfort .

Criticism

In May 2011 a study by Mana? Magazines show that there is no evidence to suggest that the washing machine lasts longer when treated with Calgon under "normal" washing conditions. Calgon questioned this. In October 2011, the Dutch TV program TROS Radar also concluded that Calgon water softeners were not required under "normal" washing conditions for Dutch customers.
