Gwynedd Mercy Academy College was established as the Academy of the Merciful Sisters in 1861 by the Mercy Sisters. The school shares a campus with Gwynedd-Mercy College. In 1861, the Sisters of Mercy established the Merciful Sisters' Academy in Philadelphia.
The academy started at Assumption Parish and then changed locations to residence on Broad Street and Columbia Avenue in Philadelphia. In August 1863, there were 28 students. Over the years, the Academy underwent many changes and eventually moved to the Taylor Estate in Gwynedd Valley, where the sisters changed the stables and set up a science building to serve the Academy and College from 1947 to 1955. In April 1955, elementary and secondary schools completed and the Academy Twelve became Gwynedd Mercy Academy.
Registration continued to increase and in 1982, the Sisters of Mercy purchased the Spring House Public School to become the home of the base division. The middle school remains in a facility built in 1955.
Over the years, Gwynedd Mercy Academy has developed its program in response to changing needs. In Montgomery County there is a great need for special classrooms for Arts and Music and for the Center for the Performing Arts. The first phase of construction was completed in August 1999. A new library, Art and Music room, music practice room, writing lab and tiered lecture hall, as well as new tennis courts and tracks were included in this first phase.
Enrollment increases and student talent emphasizes the need for continued development of the Performing Arts Center. The Renaissance Campaign was organized to finance the second phase completed in March 2004. The area includes the main entrance and lobby, a chapel with movable seats to accommodate 50 people, and an auditorium that can accommodate 525. Also included in that phase is the storage area, and TV studios.
Currently GMA has 408 girls enrollment in grades 9-12 and continues to respond in all areas according to the needs of the times.
