Origin
London Fortnum & amp; Mason claimed to have created Scotch eggs in 1738, but they may have been inspired by the Mughlai dish of kofta nargisi ("Narcissus meatball").
The earliest printed recipe appears in the 1809 edition of Maria Rundell's New System of Household Catering. Rundell, as well as other 19th-century writers, served it hot, with sauce.

Serve
Scotch eggs are a common picnic meal. In the UK, Scotch eggs are available in supermarkets, corner stores and motorway service stations. Miniature versions are also widely available, sold as "scotch mini eggs" "savory eggs", "picnic eggs", "party eggs", "egg snacks," "egg bites" or the like. It contains chopped eggs or quail eggs, rather than whole chicken eggs, and sometimes contains mayonnaise or chopped meat.
In the United States, many "English style" pubs and restaurants serve Scotch eggs, usually served hot with dipping sauce like ranch sauce, spicy sauce, or hot mustard sauce. At the Minnesota State Fair, Scotch's egg is served with a stick. Scotch eggs are available in most of the Renaissance Festival from Maryland to California.
In the Netherlands and Belgium, Scotch eggs can also be called vogelnestje ("small bird nest") because they contain eggs or eierbis ("eggball"). In Italy they are known as polpettone , consisting of meatloaf stuffed with eggs.
Area variation
Some local variations exist. Manchester eggs use pickled eggs wrapped in a mixture of pork and black Lancashire pudding, and Worcester Eggs use salted eggs in Worcestershire sauce and wrapped in a mixture of local sausage meat and white pudding.
In the Netherlands, similar snack items called eierbis (literally "egg balls") are served hot, mostly in the northern and eastern regions of the country.
