History
Elance was founded in 1999 by Beerud Sheth and Srini Anumolu. oDesk was founded in 2003 by Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis. Upwork was formed 18 months after Elance and oDesk announced their merger on December 18, 2013 to create Elance-oDesk. With the launch of Upwork, the oDesk platform is enhanced and brand-new and the company announces that Elance platform will be removed within a few years, resulting in a single freelance market.
In early September 2015, the service suffered a blackout that led to an apology issued by CEO Stephane Kasriel. This led to the introduction of the Employment Status page to offer more transparent freelancers and clients.
As of March 2017, 14 million users are reported in 180 countries with $ 1 billion in annual freelancing bills. Since its inception in 1999, the company has collected a total of $ 168 million through 10 rounds of private equity financing.
The Company is expected to submit an initial public offering in 2018.
