A Bachelor of Environmental Design , ( B.EnvD. ), is an undergraduate course. Similar in nature to a pre-law degree, B.EnvD is designed as an undergraduate training preparation for professional courses in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning, and is one of the few degrees offered as a preparatory training for the Master of Architecture degree. The three-year Alternative Master of Architecture exists for people with undergraduate degrees that are not related to the design, title M.Arch I . A Bachelor of Environmental Design should not be confused with a Bachelor in Environmental Studies, which although similar, does not train one for postgraduate professional studies in architecture, landscape design, or urban planning. The Environmental Design degree program generally takes four years of full-time study to complete, and many agencies allow special emphasis in urban planning, architecture or landscape architecture. Other pre-professional titles include B.S. in Architectural Studies, B.A. in Architecture, B.S. in Architecture, and B.S. in Construction Management. Although the Bachelor of Environmental Design is not accredited by the National Architecture Accreditation Board NAAB , like other undergraduate degrees, the program in Environmental Design is accredited through their host-institution schools by various regional institutions, such as the Central Association of College Colleges and Schools, or the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Bachelor of Environmental Design should not be equated with M.Arch or an accredited five-year Bachelor degree.

The purpose and nature of the training

Modern environmental design begins as a series of separate disciplines that intersect between the world of architectural professionals, product design, and eco/environmental movements. Intersecting similar philosophy disciplines including permaculture, equipping gardening, sustainable agriculture, zero-energy building design, passive solar architecture, pollution mitigation, cradle-to-grave, open space preservation, New Urbanism, sustainable transport and traffic planning, multi-modal transportation design etc. With the development of a bachelor's degree, these different areas are unified in the field of integrated, but interdisciplinary, environmental design. In the academic world, environmental design can be interdisciplinary with the departments of geography, environmental science, climatology, neuroscience, and various others. The best known public environmental design example is the LEED certified design, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Sustainable design is quickly adopted by governments around the world. On October 28, 2010, the US General Services Administration moved to a LEED certification mandate in all new federal buildings.
