Craigslist Joe is a 2012 documentary that accompanies Joseph Garner for a month traveling throughout the United States, solely supporting himself by contacting people on the Craigslist website. He spends months without using any form of currency and without contacting familiar people, relying on the "kindness and generosity" of Craigslist users.

Histori

Garner came up with the concept for a documentary during the Great Recession of 2008, while working as a director's assistant for The Hangover :

"The country is falling apart around me, people are losing their homes, people just go out on their own So I have to think: If I lose everything, what will happen? I may be fine, great friends and family But what if I do not? "

Another theme Garner wants to explore in this movie is the effect of social media and other technologies on social interaction.

He hired a cameraman, Kevin Flint, via Craiglist a week before starting his journey in Los Angeles. Flint receives a food salary, so does not rely entirely on Craigslist users. Garner's packing lights only during the 31-day experiment were "laptops, new phones with new numbers they had not shared with anyone, new email addresses, passports, toothbrushes and clothes on their backs." All food, shelter, and transportation will only be obtained from the connections he made on Craiglist.

Garner and Flint traveled across America, visiting many major cities, including New York, Chicago, Tallahassee, New Orleans, Portland, and San Francisco (where he managed to meet founder Craig, owner, Craig Newmark). Garner even took a pitstop to visit Mexico with one of the connections he made.

Flint recorded about 80 hours of recording within 31 days of their journey. The original rough piece from the documentary was 12 hours, according to Garner.

Upon returning home, Garner was greeted by his parents and his closest friends. When asked by his mother how to describe the experience, he can only come up with the word "inspire". "Generosity, and the stories they share, and the connections I make in a month are so deep."

Reception

Craigslist Joe cause mixed reactions. Drew Prindle, writing for Digital Trends, said that "Doc must have some drawbacks, but they are largely overshadowed by its many powers." Variety Dennis Harvey is of the opinion that the film is shallow and bland.

Some critics, including John DeFore's Slant Magazine Diego Costa, and Voice Village Ernest Hardy, have pointed Garner's "Experiment" somewhat "limited," because Garner, "a young, middle-class white man," enjoys the social rights that many poor people lack.
