When discussing his song "Here, Where and Everywhere", Paul McCartney often calls Brian Wilson "God Only Knows" the main source of inspiration. The latter song appeared on 1966's The Beach Boys album Pet Sounds, which in turn was influenced by The Beatles Rubber Soul, was released in December 1965. On May 17, 1966, a day after the new Beach Boys album has been released in America, McCartney and John Lennon attended a private listening party for Pet Sounds held at the London Waldorf Hotel.

Very impressed by Wilson's songs, McCartney wrote "Here, There and Everywhere" two weeks later at Lennon's home in Weybridge, while waiting for Lennon to wake up. McCartney recalled: "I sat by the pool on one of the sun loungers with my guitar and started picking in E. And soon [I] had some chords, and I thought that by the time he woke up, I had written enough songs so we take it into the room and finish it. "

Music structure

Writer Kenneth Womack describes "Here, There and Everywhere" as a romantic ballad "about living here and now" and "fully experiencing a conscious moment". This verse is based on the order of the major chords, while the middle of the eight (into 4 bars), which modulate into a relative tonic - if it is small, creates contrasting telling. Initial introduction "To live a better life" opens in G key and involves I-iii- ? III-ii-V 7 chord. Button? III on "I need my love to be here" (echoed in a line melody) is a substitute for dissonance for VI that can predicted (E 7 ) which usually leads to chord ii (Am). Music critic Richie Unterberger considers that this "lyric opening" contains a nearly philosophical tone of humility, admitting that the singer needs her not only to be happy but to be a better person.

This verse opens very anchored to "Here" in the G key (with a simultaneous I (G chord) and a melody of G note) and moves equally predictably to the shift of the I-ii-iii-IV chord (G-Am-Bm- C) through "making every day of the year". It repeats "Transforming my life with waves"; but soon after (at bar 5) the song actually changes on "his hand". Drop the six semitones from IV (C chord) to vii (add a non-G C # scale) then V-of-vi (B 7 ) chord [add non-G scale D ? ] which briefly modulate against the new E minor tonics. McCartney mostly sang a B note ("his hand") above F ? m, where it is eleventh, and B 7 , where it is a tonic. When the sequence is repeated ("nobody can"), McCartney sings B and C ? for F ? m, C naturally generates tritone.

The harmonious attraction with the segment of the bridge that begins "I want him everywhere" is that at that moment the central lock does go "going nowhere". This shifts through the chord F 7 (a ? VII in the old G key and V 7 in the key B ? new to I-vi-ii chord progression (B ? -Gm-Cm) in B < span>? Then shift again through D 7 chord (a III 7 in key B ? and V 7 in the new Gm key) to the G minor where we undergo i-iv progress (Gm-Cm chord) Finally pivot D 7 brings us back to the main G tonic and reinforces the "Everywhere" melody note.

Rolling Stone has recorded: "The sequence of the song's song has the effect of Brian Wilson, strolling through three related keys without ever being fully one, and modulation - especially the one on the phone that changes my life with his waves" - with deftly underlined the lyrics, inspired by McCartney's boyfriend, actress Jane Asher. Recording

The Beatles recorded "Here, There and Everywhere" towards the end of the session for their 1966 album Revolver . The band worked on the song at Abbey Road Studios for three session dates - on 14th, 16th and 17th of June. Before overdub, they recorded 13 times before reaching a satisfactory base line.

These recordings are noted for the layered background vocals, which McCartney, Lennon and George Harrison spent most of the three days trying to perfect. McCartney is mentioned in the 1989 McCartney radio series about McCartney that vocals are meant to have Beach Boys sounds; he also said that he tried to sing it in the style of Marianne Faithfull. McCartney's main vocals in this recording are widely tracked. In his book I Revolution in the Head Ian MacDonald also commented on the main guitar portion of Harrison being given a mandolin tone as through Leslie's speaker effect, before adopting a "horn-like timbre" for this song. end.

Release and acceptance

"Here, Where and Everywhere" was released in August 1966 as the fifth song on the Revolver, sequentially between Harris's Harrison "Love You For" style and the children's song "Yellow Submarine ". Writing his position in the running sequence, music critic Tim Riley said that "Here, There and Everywhere" "tamed" "eroticism" from "Love You To", and he complimented the composition as "the most perfect song" McCartney ever had write. In his review for AllMusic, Richie Unterberger described "Here, Here and Everywhere" as one of the "remarkable contributions [s]" of the author to the genre of "ballad love song", and the song with "instant default sound". Unterberger's comments on the recording: "Exquisite exquisite delights, more explicit sensual imagery, a real sense of desire and satisfaction." Less impressed, Ian MacDonald admired "musical ingenuity" but concluded that "for all its soft-focus charm, the overall effect of the song is chintzy and somewhat nasty."

In his official biography, Many Years From Now , McCartney names "Here, There and Everywhere" as one of his personal favorites. Beatles producer, George Martin, also highlight it among his favorite songs McCartney. Lennon reportedly told McCartney that "Here, Where and Everywhere" is the "best song" on Revolver . In a 1980 interview for Playboy magazine, Lennon described it as "one of my favorite songs from The Beatles". Lennon's "Woman" has a structure similar to "Here, There and Everywhere".

In 2000, Mojo placed "Here, There and Everywhere" at number 4 on the list of the greatest songs of all time. In April 2004, Rolling Stone rated it the 25th of "100 Greatest Beatles Songs".

Art Garfunkel from duo folk Simon & amp; Garfunkel cites this as his favorite pop song of all time.
