Personal life

Karim was born in Merseburg, East Germany in 1979 to father Bangladesh and a German mother. He crossed the German border with his family in the early 1980s, growing up in Neuss, West Germany. Karim moved with his family to Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1992. He graduated from Saint Paul Central High School and later attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Computer Science. He left campus before graduating to become an early employee at PayPal, but continued his studies, earning a bachelor's degree in computer science. Careers

In 1998, Jawed underwent an Internship at Silicon Graphics Inc., where he worked on 3D voxel data management for an enormous dataset for rendering volumes, including data for Visible Human Projects.

While working on PayPal, he meets Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. The three then set up a YouTube video sharing site in 2005. YouTube's first video, Me at the zoo , was uploaded by Karim on April 23, 2005.

After setting up the company and developing YouTube concepts and websites with Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, Karim enrolled as a graduate student in computer science at Stanford University while acting as advisor to YouTube. When the site was introduced in February 2005, Karim agreed not to become an employee and only became an informal advisor, and that he focused on his studies. As a result, he took a much lower share in the company compared to Hurley and Chen. Due to its smaller role in the company, Karim was largely unknown to the public as the third founder until YouTube was acquired by Google in 2006. Despite his lower share in the company, the purchase was still large enough that he received 137,443 shares, valued at approximately $ 64 million based on Google's closing stock price at the time.

In October 2006, Karim gave a lecture on YouTube's history at the University of Illinois's annual ACM Conference entitled YouTube: From Concept to Growth-Hyper . In his speech, he called Wikipedia as an innovative social experiment. Karim returned to the University of Illinois in May 2007 as the 136th Beginning Chairman and the youngest in school history.

Response to Google integration

On November 6, 2013, YouTube began requiring comment on its videos through a Google account, a move widely opposed by the YouTube community. The online petition to revert the change garnered more than 240,000 signatures.

In response to Google requiring a YouTube member to use Google for his comment system, Karim wrote in his YouTube account, "why do I need a Google account to comment on a video?", And updated the video description of his first video entitled 'I'm at the zoo' to: I can not comment here anymore, because I do not want a Google account . In response to pressure from the YouTube community, Google publicly apologizes for forcing Google users to use their real names, which is one of the reasons why Google's integration is unpopular with YouTube users. Google then drops Google's terms across all products, starting with YouTube.
