Periodontology or periodontic (from the Greek ???? fairy "around"; and ????? weird "teeth", genitive ??? odontos ) is a dental specialty studying the structure of dental support, as well as the diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as periodontium, which includes gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and periodontal ligaments. A person who specializes is known as periodontist .

Penyakit periodontal

Periodontal disease takes many different forms but is usually the result of a combination of bacterial biofilm accumulation of bacteria from red complex bacteria (eg, P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, and T. denticola) of the gingiva and teeth, combined with the host immuno-inflammatory mechanism and factor another risk that leads to the destruction of the supporting bone around the natural tooth. Untreated, the disease causes alveolar bone loss and tooth loss. By 2017, this continues to be one of the main causes of teeth loss in adults.

Fairy-Implantitis

Periodontology also involves the placement and maintenance of dental implants, including peri-implantitis treatment which is an inflammatory bone loss around dental implants. A peri-implantitis etiology is considered very similar to periodontal disease

Training

Before applying to a postgraduate training program in the field of periodontology, you must first complete a dentist degree.

Europe

Although each European Country has its own independent system, an umbrella organization - the European Periodontological Federation (EFP) - has the ability to accredit postgraduate programs in accordance with specific guidelines. EFP provides special training certificates in periodontology, periodontics, and dental implants to every successful European candidate after 3 years of full-time training in an accredited post-graduate program. EFP hosts bi-annual meetings across Europe under the title EuroPerio where thousands of dentists attend sessions featuring more than 100 top-tier speakers worldwide. The approved graduate programs are as follows: Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam, University of Bern, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Institute of Post-Graduate Dental Education, UCL Eastman Institute of Dentistry, Università © catholique de Louvain, University Complutense in Madrid, University Dublin, Trinity University, University of Strasbourg in France, Paris Diderot University at Rothschild Hospital.

Australia

The Australian program is accredited by the Australian Dental Council (ADC) and 3 years old and ends with a Master's degree (MDS) or Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent). Fellowship can then be obtained with Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, FRACDS (Perio).

Canada

The Canadian program is accredited by CDAC and a minimum of three years in length and usually culminates with a master's degree (MSc or MDent). The graduate is then eligible for the Fellowship exam with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (FRCD (C)).

India

Periodontics is offered as a specialty of dentistry in India. Periodontis attends the Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S) program affiliated with dental schools in India. The minimum qualification required for the M.D.S degree is Bachelor of Dental Surgery. The majority of dental schools in India offer M.D.S. in Periodontology. This course is a three-year duration and students are trained for implantology as well as diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant disease along with Periodontology.

United Kingdom

The British Society of Periodontology is present to promote the art and science of periodontology. Their membership includes specialists, periodontologists, general dentists, consultants and trainees in restorative dentistry, clinical academics, dental hygienists and therapists, trainee specialists in periodontology and many others.

Specialist training in periodontics in the UK is three years full time or four years on three days per week. At the end of the training, the candidate is awarded the Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) before being included in the list of specialists organized by the General Dental Council.

United States

The accredited American Dental Association (ADA) program is at least three years old. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, a trained periodontologist in the United States is a specialist in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and oral inflammation, and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Many periodontists also diagnose and treat oral pathology and periodontics are the historical basis for oral drug specialization. After successful completion of postgraduate training, a periodontologist becomes a member of the Council for the examination of the American Board of Periodontology. Successful completion of board certification results in diplomacy status on the American Board of Periodontology.
