The University of Pennsylvania Veterinary University, often referred to as Penn Vet was founded in 1884. It has two campuses; The main campus is located in Philadelphia, and the second campus is located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. On the Philadelphia campus, the first, second, and third veterinary students attend classes. It is also home to numerous research facilities as well as Veterans J. Matthew J. Ryan Hospital, a veterinary education hospital. The second campus of the school, New Bolton Center, located in about 700 acres of rural Chester County, Pennsylvania, is home to George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals.

More than 6,000 vets have graduated from school, the only veterinary school in Pennsylvania. This school gives the title Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) rather than Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). It also offers VMD-PhD programs and VMD-MBA programs.
