Wake Therapy is a form of sleep deprivation that is used as a treatment for depression. Subjects stay awake all night, or wake up at 1 am and stay up all morning, and the next full day. While sleepy, the patient finds that their depression is gone, until they sleep again. Combining this with bright light therapy makes the beneficial effect last longer than a day. Lack of partial sleep in the second half of the night may be as effective as a sleep-deprivation session throughout the night.

Wake therapy is a therapy that falls under chronotherapeutics. Chronotherapy (the care scheduling) is the process of manipulating biological and sleep rhythms that can help improve affective disorders quickly.

Wake therapy is useful for those with severe depression along with unipolar, bipolar, and melancholy types of depression. Wake-up therapy is best used to initiate the effects of antidepressant use. Wake therapy is the use of a prolonged wake-up time, along with a period of restoration of sleep. This is a quick way to improve the symptoms of depression. This therapy is best used with other chronotherapeutic techniques. The use of this therapy for months and other therapies can be very effective to help prevent depression relapse.

Procedures

Wake therapy involves one to three turns consisting of complete sleep avoidance for the night and one day after, then the cycle is separated by sleep-restful nights (full nights sleep). Treatment lasts from two to five days, depending on the number of rounds performed. Relapse to depression usually occurs immediately after any sleep. Interventions are performed at a hospital or sleeping center to make sure the program is done properly and the full effect is set.
