A business analyst ( BA ) is someone who analyzes an organization or business domain (real or hypothetical) and documents the business or process or system, assesses the business model or its integration with technology.

The role of systems analysts can also be defined as a bridge between business problems and technological solutions. Here business issues can be anything about business systems, such as models, processes, or methods. Technological solutions may be the use of architectures, tools, or software applications. Systems analysts are required to analyze, change and ultimately solve business problems with the help of technology.

There are at least four types of business analysis:

1. Business developers - to identify business needs and business opportunities
2. Business model analysis - to define an organization's market policies and approaches
3. Process design - to standardize an organization's workflow
4. System analysis - interpretation of rules and business requirements for technical systems (generally within IT)

Business analysts, sometimes, are someone who is part of business operations and working with Information Technology to improve the quality of service provided, sometimes helpful in the integration and testing of new solutions.

BA can also support the development of training materials, participate in implementation, and provide post-implementation support. This may involve the development of a project plan and often requires project management skills

BAs work in various industries such as finance, banking, insurance, telecommunications, utilities, software services, government, and so on. Due to working on projects with a high level of abstraction, BA can switch between all industries.

Subject areas of BA business domains can work including workflow, billing, mediation, provisioning, and customer relationship management. The telecommunications industry has mapped these functional areas in their earmarked Operational Maps (eTOM) model, Banking in the Information Framework (IFW) and emergency agencies in the Prevention and Recovery Prevention Response (PPRR) model.

Finally, business analysts have no fixed and fixed role, because they can take part in the scale of operations, sales planning, strategy or development process.
