Veterinary education in France is secured by four grandes ÃÆ' Â © coles , veterinary schools, located in Lyon, Maisons-Alfort, Nantes and Toulouse. The final study is at least seven years after baccalaurÃÆ'Â at and ends with a deployment thesis that entitles the veterinarian state diploma.
The course begins with two years of scientific studies at the end of which the students spend a national contest to enter the veterinary school, where the study will then continue for five years.
France was the first country where veterinary teaching had been institutionalized, through the establishment of the first veterinary school in the 18th century.

Therefore, all students receive extensive training in various fields, which may not be directly related to veterinary medicine, such as plant biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics.

In France, there are four veterinary schools:
- Oniris Nantes
- Alfort National Veterinary School
- Toulouse National School of Veterinary Medicine
- VetAgro Sup Lyon
All of these are public institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The only existing classification of these schools is given indirectly by the last rank called at the end of the entrance exam. This rating only reflects the popularity of the school among students who pass the exam, may be consistent with reality or not. The schools of Lyon and Alfort are so often two schools that enjoy greater prestige among the students. This prestige can be explained by the age of these schools established in the eighteenth century, as compared to the newer schools of Toulouse and Nantes, and therefore have a poorly impregnated collective imagination.

Core curriculum
Basic training lasts 4 years divided into 8 semesters. The first 3 years are rather theoretical, the fourth year is more clinical. This general essence ends with a fundamental veterinary studies degree (DEFV), a diploma that provides a master's degree.
During the first 3 years, future veterinarians study many subjects. Among them are disciplines that describe the normal state and function of the body, such as anatomy, histology, physiology and immunology; disciplines that explain pathogens, such as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and mycology; discipline related to the body's pathological functions, such as pathology and pathophysiology; discipline to understand the mechanisms and characteristics of the disease, such as infectiology and pathology; Practical disciplines, such as surgery and surgery; disciplines that focus on support and diagnostic treatment, such as medical imaging, clinical biology and pharmacology; as well as discipline in certain apparatus such as ophthalmology, dermatology, rheumatology and theriogenology (gynecology and obstetrics).
