Business Insider was launched in February 2009 and is based in New York City. Founded by former CEO DoubleClick, Kevin P. Ryan, Dwight Merriman, and Henry Blodget, this publication is the Silicon Alley Insider brand (starting May 16, 2007) and Clusterstock (starting 20 March 2008). In addition to providing and analyzing business news, the site collects news about various subjects from around the web. It reported earnings for the first time in the 4th quarter of 2010. As of June 2012, it has 5.4 million unique visitors. Now an average of about 70 million unique visitors, every month.

Business Insider also holds industry conferences, such as IGNITION, which explores emerging digital media business models. In January 2015, Business Insider launched BI Intelligence , a subscription-based research service that provides data and analysis on mobile industry, payments, eCommerce, social, and digital media. The site publishes many annual editorial franchises, such as "Digital 100: The Most Valuable Personal Technology Company in the World."

Acquisitions

On September 29, 2015, Axel Springer SE announced that it has acquired 88% of the shares in Business Insider, Inc. for $ 343 million reported (EUR306 million). After purchase, Axel Springer SE will hold a share of about 97%, and personal investment firm Jeff Bezos will hold the remaining shares.

Tech Insider

In July 2015, Business Insider started the Tech Insider stand-alone technology website, with a staff of 40 people working primarily from the company's New York headquarters but separated from the main newsletter Business Insider .

Inside Market

In October 2016, Business Insider embarked on Markets Insider , globally focused market and news services. Data is provided by German financial portal Finanzen.net , belonging to other Axel Springer.

BI Sub-Saharan Africa

In January 2017, Business Insider announced that it would launch a new sub-saharan site in partnership with Ringier Africa Digital Publishing. Henry Blodget - co-founder, CEO, and Chief Editor of the Global Insider business said of the partnership, "Ringier... is the ideal partner to help us bring to our unique sub-Saharan Africa [voice] and attitude. "Former African Ventures journalist David Adeleke is the editor for Business Insider SSA.

In January 2009, the Clusterstock section appeared on Time "25 Best Financial Blogs," and the Silicon Alley Insider section was registered at PC Magazine "Our Favorite Blogs 2009." 2009 also sees the selection of Business Insider as the official Webby honor for Best Business Blog.

In 2012, the Business Insider is named for the Inc 500. By 2013, the publication is once again nominated in the Business-Blog category at the Webby Awards. In January 2014, The New York Times reported that Business Insider web traffic is comparable to The Wall Street Journal . In 2017, Digiday includes an Insider's trail as a candidate in two separate categories- "Best New Vertical" and "Best Use of Instagram" -in their annual Publishing Awards.

This website, however, faces criticism for its click style headbase. In 2013, The New Yorker criticized websites for prioritizing publishing speeds for accuracy.
