Pre-production is the process of refining some elements involved in movies, games, or other performance. There are three parts to production: pre-production, production, and post production. Pre-production ends when planning ends and content begins to be produced.

In film production and video production, pre-production formally begins once a project has received a green welcome. At this stage, finalization of preparations for production takes effect. Financing will generally be confirmed and many key elements such as lead cast members, directors and cinematographers are set. At the end of pre-production, scenarios are usually resolved and satisfactory to all investors and other stakeholders.

During pre-production, the scripts are broken down into individual scene stories and all the locations, properties, cast members, costumes, special effects, and visual effects are identified. A very detailed schedule is produced and arrangements are made to make the necessary elements available to filmmakers in a timely manner. Sets are built, crews are hired, financial arrangements are enforced and start dates for the beginning of major photography are set. At some point in pre-production there will be a manuscript reading usually attended by all members with a speaking section, director, all department heads, financial experts, producers, and public relations.

In the music industry, pre-production is the process by which a recording artist spends time creating and refining their musical ideas. The artist produced a recording of a demo song, or a rough draft, to establish the song's creative premise. This reduces the time and money spent in expensive studios. The goal is to enter the main production recording phase with the basic and most promising ideas that have been established.

Leading manufacturers who favor this process include Bruce Fairbairn and Bob Rock. They have both produced successful albums such as Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet , MÃÆ'¶tley CrÃÆ'¼e Feelgood , Metallica Album The Black Album and Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation .
