In Commonwealth countries, the Special Education Needs ( SEN or SEND ) are student-centered schools especially with learning disabilities or disabilities. SEN includes specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD, pervasive disorders such as autism and physical disabilities such as visual impairment and hearing loss. It may also reflect the need for gifted education.
The policy and provision of NES is essential with each country in the United Kingdom having separate systems under separate governments: The British Government is responsible for education in the UK, the Scottish Government is responsible for education in Scotland, the Government of Wales is responsible for education in Wales and the Northern Ireland Executive is responsible for education in Northern Ireland.
Throughout the UK school education system, the provisions for NES are broadly varied with 'mixed economies' of 'teaching support' teams based in public schools, specialist schools offering permanent placements and student referral units that offer temporary placement for students subject to exclusion formal and require further assessment.
However, there are common practices found throughout the country. All schools are legally obliged to maintain SEN Coordinator posts or equivalent positions. This is the only compulsory position other than the principal/principal position. There is also the SEN Code of Practice, which was updated in 2014, which provides legally binding guidance on how provisions should be established and maintained.
