The Five Love Languages: How to Express Your Sincere Commitment to Your Mate is a 1995 book by Gary Chapman. It outlines five ways to express and experience the love that Chapman calls "love language": receiving rewards, quality time, affirmative words, action of service (devotion), and physical touch. Examples are given from his counseling practice, as well as questions to help determine his own love language.

Chapman's book claims that the list of five languages of love is complete. According to this theory, everyone has one primary love language and one language of secondary love.

Chapman suggests that in order to find other people's love languages, one must observe the way they express love to others, and analyze what they most often complain about and what they ask of the most important person. He theorized that people tend to naturally love love the way they love to receive love, and better communication between couples can be resolved when one can show concern to others in the language of love that the recipient understands. An example is if a husband's love language is an act of service, he may be confused when he does the laundry for his wife and he does not consider it as an act of love, seeing it as only doing household chores, because the language love he understands is the word of affirmation verbal that he loves her). He may try to use what he values, words of affirmation, to express his love for him, which he will not appreciate as much as he does. If he understands his love language and cuts the grass for him, he feels it in his love language as an act of expressing his love for him; likewise, if he tells him that he loves him, he values it as an act of love.

There is a lack of research to test the validity of the Chapman model and whether it can be generalized. Egbert (2006) states that Five Love Languages â € <â €
