Oil cooling is the use of engine oil as a coolant, usually to remove excess heat from the internal combustion engine. The heat engine transfers heat to the oil which then usually passes through the heat exchanger, usually a type of radiator known as oil cooler . The refrigerated oil flows back to the hot object to cool it continuously.

Usage

Oil cooling is commonly used to cool high-performance motorcycle engines that are not liquid-cooled. Typically, the cylindrical tube remains air-cooled in a traditional motorcycle mode, but benefits the cylinder head from additional cooling. Since there is already an oil circulation system available for lubrication, this oil is also supplied to the cylinder head and used as a coolant. Compared with oil systems that are used only for lubrication, oil cooling requires additional oil capacity, greater flow rates through oil pumps, and oil cooling (or larger cooling than usual).

If air conditioning proves enough for a lot of running time (such as for in-flight aero-engines, or motorcycles in motion), then oil cooling is an ideal way to cope with times when extra cooling is required (such as aero engine imposition before take-off , or motorbike in a city traffic jam). But if the engine is a racing engine that always produces a large amount of heat, water or liquid cooling may be better.

Air-cooled engines may experience "shock cooling" when dropping from cruising altitudes before landing. As long as it goes down, very little power is required, so the engine stops back and thus develops less heat than when maintaining altitude. While decreasing, the speed of the aircraft rises, substantially increasing the engine air cooling rate. These factors may cause the cylinder head to crack; but the adoption of oil-cooled cylinder heads significantly reduces or cancels the problem because the head is now "warmed oil".

In the 1980s, Suzuki used the "SACS" oil cooling system on the GSX-R sportbikes, but later turned to water coolers.

The Wankel machine has an oil cooling feature other than a coolant to successfully manage its excessive heat. This rotary engine is most famous for its application on the Mazda RX-7 and RX-8.

Splash lubrication is the basic form of oil cooling. Some slow start engines will have "spoon splashers" under the big end of the connecting rod. This spoon will enter into the sump oil and will throw the oil, in the hope of cooling and lubricating the bottom of the piston.

Benefits

  • The oil has a higher boiling point than water, so it can be used to cool stuff at a temperature of 100 Ã, Â ° C or higher. However, pressurized water cooling may also exceed 100 ° C
  • Oil is an electrical insulator, so it can be used inside or in direct contact with electrical appliances like in transformers.
  • Oil already exists as a lubricant, so no additional cooling tank, pump or radiator is needed (although all of these items may have to be larger than others).
  • The cooling water may be corrosive to the engine and must contain rust inhibitors, while the oil naturally helps prevent corrosion.
  • So, if through a gasket failure, refrigerant oil must come in, say, combustion chamber or container, this will be a mere inconvenience; but if the cooling water is equally leaky, engine damage may occur.

Loss

  • The cooling oil may be limited to cooling objects below about 200-300 Ã, Â ° C, otherwise, the oil may degrade and even leave the ashy deposit.
  • Pure water can evaporate or boil, but water can not be degraded, although it can become polluted and acidic.
  • Water is generally available, cooling should be added to the system, but oil may not.
  • Unlike water, oil may be flammable.
