Plot

Sara Johnson, a promising dancer in a suburban Chicago suburban school, hopes to be admitted to the Juilliard School and invites her mom to attend the audition. He failed to audition and soon learned that his mother was involved in a fatal car accident in his haste to get to the audition.

Sara suffered a sense of guilt and surrendered to ballet. He moved with his father and moved to Chicago urban school. His father is a jazz musician who plays trumpets and usually plays in nightclubs. At her new school Sara was one of a handful of white students but quickly became friends with Chenille, a single teen mom who had relationship problems. Chenille invites Sara to a dance club called STEPPS, where she has her first dancing experience with a hip hop rhythm. At STEPPS, Sara danced with Derek, Chenille's brother and a student with the dream of finally attending Georgetown Medical School. She decides to help Sara develop her dancing skills by incorporating more hip hop into her style. Derek takes a reluctant Sara to Joffrey Ballet and, after that, Sara confides in her about her mother and her dream. Later, they returned to the club and amazed others with their dance. Upon reaching his dream of being accepted at Georgetown University, Derek convinced him to follow his dream of Juilliard. Finally, Sara and Derek started a relationship.

At school, Nikki, Derek's ex-boyfriend who is jealous, fights with Sara. Chenille told Sara that she did not approve of fights but could understand the bitterness because Sara, a white girl, was seen stealing one of the few worthy black men in school. Because of this conversation, Sara broke up with Derek. Meanwhile, Derek is dealing with his friend Malakai, who is very fond of the gang lifestyle that Derek is trying to leave behind. Derek accepts Malakai's plea for support on drive-by for the same time as Sara's audition. Sara's father spoke from heart to heart with her and encouraged her to audition for Juilliard again.

After hearing what Chenille had told Sara, Derek confronted him and admitted the real reason for throwing Nikki out. She confesses what she did wrong and encourages her to be with Sara. Chenille also warned Derek not to support Malakai knowing the consequences and he would miss the chance to attend Georgetown. Derek turned his back on Malakai to attend Sara's audition. He arrived at the crucial point of his performance to offer his moral encouragement and support. After her audition, Sara was accepted and she revived her relationship with Derek. Meanwhile, drive-by became a failure and Malakai was arrested. The film was closed when Sara, Derek, Chenille, and their friends met at STEPPS to celebrate Sara's successful audition.

Salon reviewers call the movie "a bad, friendly, and fun movie," observing that "for all its stupid cliches, it offers the basic appeal of teenage movies: the pleasure of watching children become children, acting like they do in between themselves rather than how parents and teachers expect them to act. "Roger Ebert rated three stars out of four, stating that" the setup promises cliches, but the development is smart, the characters are more complicated than we expected, and the endings do not tie them all in a way that predictable.
